The delicate mastermind- Meet Chamomile

A subtle little magician

Chamomile is one of those things that is often overlooked in today's times. It calms you without knocking you out. It is a subtle little magician in a world that has become entertained by the dramatic things.

Chamomile isn't going to show up in an exaggerated way. Chamomile is quiet, calming, and gentle but make no mistake it still holds a lot of power. As a matter of fact chamomile is quite impressive once you get to know it beyond surface level.

It comes from, "that" family...

Chamomile is part of the Asteraceae family which is full of plants that thrive after disruption of the soil, such as along the roadside or fields that were overturned. Chamomile isn't as fragile as it seems. It is more of a recovery plant. Speaking of families, chamomile is also part of the - ragweed - family; which is completely fine, we aren't knocking who it is related to but keep that in mind if you have sensitivities.

It gives before it is complete

Something else that is really fascinating is that chamomile actually gives its benefits before it reaches peak maturity. Most plants are more potent when they are at their peak but chamomile is so generous it gives the most medicinal properties before it finishes its full life cycle. Back in the day chamomile gave so much that it actually would throw itself on the floor and let people walk all over it. Okay, maybe it didn't throw itself down but people actually did cover the floor with chamomile and walked over so they could enjoy the scent. It was also used as a ground cover intentionally for people to walk on it.

A shift in perception

The calming effect people experience after drinking chamomile actually comes from compounds that interact with receptors in the brain to help you process stimulation. So, you may feel better after having chamomile in your evening even if your situation hasn't changed. Chamomile helps you shift your perception. It is also more impactful when it becomes a regular part of your routine instead of being used occasionally on a hard day. It is more reliable when it is consumed regularly.

Delicate but loves to be stressed

If you are stressed out think about chamomile as a little inspiring plant. This delicate looking plant doesn't do its best work when everything is calm, it actually does its best work when it is stressed out. During times of drought, insects, and heat waves it produces more calming compounds which build up during those more stressful times making it even more beneficial. So when you drink chamomile to help with your stress just know that you are drinking the chemistry of a plant that learned how to stay functional while things were difficult, that alone feels a bit empowering.

The plants doctor

Chamomile, often overlooked by today’s standards was once called "the plants physician"

Years ago people noticed when chamomile was growing in a struggling garden the nearby plants would begin to

improve. There would be better growth and less disease. It was actually used at one point by gardeners to "restart" wilted plants. They would brew a weak chamomile tea and water struggling plants to help them avoid fungal issues.

A change in taste

Chamomile was also planted intentionally near other plants because people discovered it would change the flavor of those it was planted close to. It didn’t change the flavors in a massive way but it made them less harsh and more well rounded.

Chatty Chamomile

If chamomile hasn't impressed you yet...

It can communicate with other plants. When chamomile is under a lot of stress, like if it is being cut or attacked by insects it releases a very volatile compound into the air which nearby plants can detect. These signals start activating those plants' defense systems even if they aren't being harmed or in danger.

What chamomile shows us

Chamomile isn't the shy little delicate plant we have all written it off to be. Chamomile is an excellent plant that shows us strength can come from difficult times, we can give before we are finished blooming, and thriving can be a beautiful thing even when we are being disrupted. I guess it is true, not all powerful things have to be dramatic and showy about it.
